Chapter Highlights for My Life, My Body: Sex Ed Made Easy - Sexual Pleasure

Welcome to the next blog in the series - Chapter Highlights for My Life, My Body: Sex Ed Made Easy. This blog is about the seventh chapter - Sexual Pleasure.

This chapter is all about understanding sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is so often ignored and not mentioned in sexual health education. Yet it is a vital part of sexual health.

Sexual pleasure is normal and healthy for everyone to experience and it forms part of healthy relationships.

But what exactly is sexual pleasure?

Sexual pleasure is about feeling safe, sexual and comfortable in our mind and body when we experience sex.

Notice I didn’t use the word intercourse and instead I used the word sex. Because sex encompasses any intimate behaviour either alone or partnered, that gives pleasure to the body in a sexual way. Not just orgasm-oriented intercourse.

In the eBook My Life, My Body: Sex Ed Made Easy, the chapter about sexual pleasure describes what sexual pleasure is in easy to understand terms. It highlights that sexual pleasure can be felt alone or with others, that it is normal and healthy to feel and that sexual pleasure can be different for everyone.

The chapter describes who we can share (how we feel sexual pleasure) with - our sexual partner/s; and that we can also listen to our sexual partner/s describe how they like to feel sexual pleasure, and touch them (with consent) how they like to be touched.

The chapter reinforces that when we engage in partnered sexual pleasure that consent is key and if we are unsure if our partner consents, we need to ask.

We learn that we can feel sexual pleasure from sexual thoughts, feelings, fantasies, dreams and emotions. Not just physical touch.

We also learn that sexual pleasure does not include harm. Harm and pleasure cannot co-exist. I’m not talking about consensual sex practices/kinks that include pain. I’m talking about abuse and coercion. There is no space for abuse and coercion in sexual pleasure.

In sexual pleasure we make space for psychological and physical safety, enjoyment, exploration and when the sexual pleasure is partnered, we have consent and communication.
